Hello everyone! 😃
This blog is not dead and will continue after a couple more months – I’ve got stuff lined up both on the tinkering front and on the sewing. But: we bought a house!!!!!
It’s been a month now that we got the keys, and we’ll be moving in about a month, so we are exactly half way fixing it up, right? You wish! 😉 Like with all building projects, this one takes longer than planned (wished), so we’ll be still finishing things up after we move, hence another couple of months before I can do any decent blogging.
But it will be all worth it because I’m getting a sewing room instead of a sewing bay window! 🤩
It’s just a suburban house, nothing fancy, but it’s ours – no more renting! And it’s got things like a working toilet, a bath where dirty waste water does not come up every time you do the dishes, a kitchen tap that does not require troll’s force to turn, and it’s got a fireplace and a kitchen-diner which is not also your sitting room with a sewing bay window, all in one… A complete luxury, I’m telling you! We are very excited. 😊
So stay tuned, I’ll be back in a couple of months, when, literally, the dust settles.
Vintage Sewing Machines 
Congratulations on buying your own house! I’m curious …… as my husband and I rent too, and though we have a very secure tenancy we are constantly trying to work out the best thing to do for our future (husband has 6 years to go till retirement). We can only afford to buy if we move a long way away. I hope you get settled in soon and back to sewing!

Thanks, Lizzie! If you need to get a mortgage, even a small one, 6 years to retirement may be a problem – because the mortgage would only have 6 years to run. I still have 15 years to go, so we managed to get a mortgage on my name. As for the tenancy being sure, I found there is no such thing in the UK, as opposed to Holland or Germany, for example. I was renting a flat here for over ten years, and it all looked very sure and settled, but then the old landlord died, the house was sold, and the new landlord had other plans. We had to pick up and move with just two months notice – and that’s a generous notice, apparently! Never again. 🙂 I don’t see myself doing such a stunt when I’m older – not with all the sewing machines in every corner! 😉
But then again, obviously people rarely become homeless in the UK just because their tenancy ends. It’s all not as bad as that, but can become a hassle. Plus, landlords are not too keen on fixing things like poor plumbing, and we’ve had enough of that too. Certainly my husband had, as he’s a site carpenter with exceptionally high standards, not just in carpentry. Jobs have got to be done right, or get out of my way… 😉 So now he’s making sure everything is getting done right. 🙂

Actually our tenancy is Regulated, which means it’s highly unlikely we could ever be evicted. The house was originally tied to my husband’s job on this farm where he worked for 22 years. Fortunately when anything goes wrong with the house it is dealt with quickly. We like the house and the location (and I love my sewing room!) but have to decide what’s financially best for our future.

Thanks, Dan – yes, I’ve been quite consumed by this, admittedly! I still have to go to work, too. But this is all nothing compared to the stress of buying it! Good lord! I don’t know how people do it together with selling their previous house – at least we are renting now, so it makes it all a lot easier.

Thank you! Yes, we specifically wanted an end house, for those reasons, and also to have side access to the back garden – we are planning to put a wooden cabin in it – a workshop for my husband. So I’m not the only one getting hobby space, but he’s a carpenter, and needs a workshop, not a bedroom. 😉

How nice to be able to own! We are lucky here, though the price of our house is outrageous (but I live in an outrageously expensive part of the world). However that may be, your own place – your own owned place – is great! Of course, you are responsible for fixing things when they go awry, which for some could be dicey depending on the house. I love having space for toys and hobbies and my own room to play in. Elena, you are going to be in heaven once all is settled. Looking forward to more posts of your new place, even if you aren’t blogging sewing. Congrats!

Thank you! The main reason for buying a house rather than renting, was that we could never be told to move because the landlord changed his plans. No landlord here! 😀

Congratulations – I also have the vintage bug! Moved last year to the wilds so that we could get work done on the house and enough left over to have a quilt room for me. My son rents and I totally understand – they were only in 2 months before being given a one month notice. The last house was so awful, damp – but the worst was the faulty wiring! That one they were pleased to extend the contract because it was so bad! At the time it was all he could afford. I’m so glad he’s not in there now! Still renting but in a much nicer place and they are saving for a house of their own. Nothing quite being your own landlord! Wish you well and look forward to seeing your machines in action! Wonderful news Elena! Moving can be a nightmare but that’s OK, you know there will be an end to it- just keep plugging away. Hopefully in the next couple of months I will have an actual sewing room too. Currently I have major purging going on to dedicate one room to the primary sewing equipment, although supplies will still be spilled over into my bedroom (which is where ALL the sewing stuff is now). It’s not a house move, but I will be just as excited as you to have an actual sewing room instead of a ‘squatter’s plot’ in another room!
